If you build links with GSA Search Engine Ranker, the anchor text settings on the Data tab decide more about your results than almost anything else on that screen. Get the mix wrong and you leave a footprint that looks like exactly what it is. Get it right and the same links read as ordinary citations.

This guide walks through all seven anchor text fields in GSA SER, what to put in each one, and why. If you would rather watch than read, the walk-through video is further down the page. There is also an audio version just below.

Kurze Antwort

  • GSA SER has seven anchor text fields. You set six of them as percentages, and the main anchor takes whatever is left of 100%.
  • Because of that, fields 2 to 7 must add up to 98% if you want a 2% exact-match anchor. If they add up to more than 100, GSA SER has nothing left for the main anchor.
  • The settings we use: main 2%, partial match 25%, secondary 8%, branding 35%, LSI 8%, generic 12%, domain 10%.
  • Branding is the biggest slice on purpose. Brand anchors are the safest links you can build and they are what a real citation usually looks like.
  • Exact match is the field to be careful with. Google’s spam policies name optimised anchor text directly.

What’s the Big Deal With Anchor Text Variations?

You might wonder why you should bother, and why not just use the main anchor text field in GSA Suchmaschinenranker and leave the rest empty. Plenty of people do exactly that. It is also the fastest way to build a link profile that stands out for the wrong reasons.

Six reasons anchor text variation matters

  1. It keeps you out of trouble. Google’s spam policies list “links with optimized anchor text” in articles, guest posts and press releases as an example of link spam. Repeating one keyword across every link is the clearest version of that pattern.
  2. It widens what you rank for. A range of related phrases in your anchors gives search engines more ways to match your page to a query, instead of betting everything on one term.
  3. It reads better to people. A link that describes where it goes is more useful than the same three words repeated. That helps engagement, and engagement is what the link was for.
  4. It makes the profile look earned. When people link to you naturally, they use your brand name, your URL, and whatever words happened to fit their sentence. A varied profile matches that. A uniform one does not.
  5. It picks up long-tail terms. Secondary and related phrases bring in queries that are less competitive than your head term, and often closer to a buying decision.
  6. It fits how search actually works now. Search engines match meaning, not just strings. Anchors that use related wording give them more to work with.

What Are the Recommended Anchor Text Variation Settings in GSA SER?

The right percentages depend on your site, your niche and how competitive it is. What follows is a starting point that has worked for us across a lot of projects. Treat it as a baseline to adjust, not a rule.

Anchor text variation based on best practice

Anchor text typeSuggested rangeWhat it is
Main (exact match)1–2%The keyword itself, word for word
Partial match20–30%The keyword inside a longer phrase
Secondary5–10%Related terms that are not your head keyword
Branding30–40%Your brand or company name
LSI5–10%Synonyms and closely related wording
Generisch10–15%“click here”, “read more”, “this site”
Domain10–15%The bare URL as the anchor

Anchor Text Variations Used by Asia Virtual Solutions

These are the exact numbers we put into GSA SER. Note that fields 2 to 7 come to 98%, which is what leaves 2% for the main anchor.

FieldAnchor text typeOur setting
1Main (exact match)2% — calculated by GSA SER, not entered
2Partial match25%
3Secondary8%
4Branding35%
5LSI8%
6Generisch12%
7Domain10%
Fields 2–7 total98%

This is the part most people get wrong. If your six entered fields add up to 101%, GSA SER has nothing left over and your main anchor never gets used. Add them up before you save the project.

None of these numbers are fixed. Watch your rankings, and adjust. Where the links come from matters more than the exact split, so keep the focus on relevant sources first and the percentages second.

How to Justify the Recommended Anchor Text Variations

These numbers are not guesses, but they are also not laws. They come from Google’s published guidance on what counts as link spam, plus the well-documented behaviour of natural link profiles. Here is the thinking behind each field.

The reasoning for each recommendation

Main anchor text (exact match) – 2%

This is the keyword you want to rank for, used word for word. It is the strongest signal you can send and the one most likely to get you in trouble, which is why it is the smallest slice. Keep it to 1–2% and make sure those links come from places worth linking from.

Referenz: Google Search spam policies name “links with optimized anchor text in articles, guest posts, or press releases” as link spam.

Partial match anchor text – 25%

Your keyword sitting inside a longer, natural phrase. You keep most of the relevance of an exact match without the footprint, which is why it can carry a much larger share at 20–30%.

Referenz: Moz’s anchor text guide covers the role of variation and context.

Secondary anchor text – 8%

Related keywords that are not your main target. They pull in long-tail queries and tell search engines what else the page covers. A 5–10% share is enough to do that job.

Referenz: Ahrefs’ anchor text guide walks through the anchor types and where each one fits.

Branding anchor text – 35%

Your brand or company name. This is the largest slice, and it should be. When someone links to a business without being asked, they usually use its name. Brand anchors are also the least likely to be read as manipulation, which makes them the safest volume you can build.

Referenz: the same spam policies target optimised anchors, not brand mentions.

LSI anchor text – 8%

A word of honesty about this field. GSA SER labels it “LSI”, and LSI keywords are not a real thing as far as Google is concerned. John Mueller has said so twice on the record, most recently in January 2023: “Anyone who tells you to use LSI keywords is still wrong after all these years.”

That does not make the field useless. Ignore the label and treat it as what it is in practice: synonyms and closely related wording. Those anchors are genuinely worth having. Just do not expect a hidden algorithm to be reading them. Keep it at 5–10%.

Referenz: Google says LSI keywords have no effect, Search Engine Roundtable, January 2023.

Generic anchor text – 12%

Phrases like “click here”, “read more” and “this website”. They carry no keyword value at all, and that is the point. Real link profiles are full of them, so a profile with none looks built. Around 10–15% is right.

Domain as anchor text – 10%

The bare URL, pasted as the link text. It happens constantly in forums, comments and citations, so including it at 10–15% adds naturalness for no risk.

Note. These percentages are a balanced starting point, not a formula that guarantees anything. Nobody outside Google knows the thresholds, and anyone who tells you they do is selling something. Watch your own results and adjust.

Wo die Ankertextvariationen im GSA-Suchmaschinenranker eingegeben werden sollen

The anchor text fields are on the first screen you see when you start a new project, the Data tab. Here is what goes in each one.

  1. Main anchor text (exact match). There is no percentage box here. GSA SER works it out from whatever is left of 100% after fields 2 to 7. Aim to leave it 1–2%.
  2. Partial match anchor text — 20 to 30%.
  3. Secondary anchor text — 5 to 10%.
  4. Branding anchor text — 30 to 40%.
  5. LSI anchor text — 5 to 10%.
  6. Generic anchor text — 10 to 15%.
  7. Domain as anchor text — 10 to 15%.

KI-Tool zur Variation von Ankertexten

Working out seven sets of anchor text by hand is the part people give up on. So we built a free tool that does it for you. Give it your website URL or three keywords, and it returns all seven variations with the percentage to use for each.

How to use the AI anchor text generator

  1. Open the tool at asiavirtualsolutions.com/anchortexttool. A free ChatGPT account is enough to use it.
  2. Enter one of the following and press enter:
    • Your website address, for example https://asiavirtualsolutions.com
    • Three keywords you want to promote, comma separated: Schlüsselwort1, Schlüsselwort2, Schlüsselwort3
    • A website address plus a language: https://example.com, Language: French
    • Three keywords plus a language: Stichwort1, Stichwort2, Stichwort3, Sprache: Spanisch
  3. Wait a few seconds for the output.
  4. You will get the anchor text variations along with the recommended percentage for each one.
  5. To paste them into GSA SER, run the results through a spin syntax converter first. We use spintaxgenerator.com.

Statistiken zu Ankertextvariationen

You will find plenty of confident percentages about anchor text distribution online. Almost none of them link to a study you can check, and the figures contradict each other from one blog to the next. We would rather give you what is actually on the record than repeat numbers nobody can source.

  • Google names optimised anchor text as link spam. The Search spam policies list “links with optimized anchor text in articles, guest posts, or press releases distributed on other sites” and “forum comments with optimized links in the post or signature”. Both describe what an unvaried GSA SER campaign produces.
  • LSI keywords are not real. John Mueller of Google, July 2019: “There’s no such thing as LSI keywords.” He repeated it in January 2023. GSA SER still labels a field “LSI”, so use it for synonyms and related wording, and ignore the name.
  • There is no published threshold. No percentage has ever been confirmed by Google as safe or unsafe. Anyone quoting an exact cut-off is guessing.
  • What we can tell you is our own data. The split in the table above is what we run on our own projects and on client work, and it has held up through several core updates. That is experience, not a study, and we would rather label it correctly.

  6. Spintax-Generator – converts the tool’s output into the spin syntax GSA SER expects.

Häufig gestellte Fragen zu Ankertextvarianten

What are anchor text variations?

Anchor text is the clickable words in a link. Anchor text variations means using different wording across your links instead of the same phrase every time: your keyword, longer phrases containing it, your brand name, the bare URL, or generic words like “click here”. The point is to end up with a link profile that looks like one people built rather than one a tool produced.

Why is anchor text variation important in SEO?

Because repeating one keyword across every backlink is the pattern Google’s spam policies describe. Those policies name “links with optimized anchor text” directly. Varying your anchors removes that footprint, and it also gives search engines more ways to match your page to different queries.

How many types of anchor text variations are there?

GSA Search Engine Ranker gives you seven fields: main (exact match), partial match, secondary, branding, LSI, generic, and domain. Elsewhere in SEO you will see the same idea described with fewer names — exact match, partial match, branded, naked URL and generic — but the seven GSA SER fields cover all of them.

What is the best proportion of anchor text variations for a website?

There is no confirmed answer, and anyone giving you an exact threshold is guessing. What works in practice is a profile where branded anchors are the largest share and exact match is the smallest. These are the settings we use in GSA SER:

  • Main anchor text: 2% (calculated by GSA SER)
  • Partial match: 25%
  • Secondary: 8%
  • Branding: 35%
  • LSI: 8%
  • Generic: 12%
  • Domain: 10%

Fields 2 to 7 come to 98%, which leaves GSA SER 2% for the main anchor.

Can overdoing anchor text variations harm my site’s SEO?

It can, though it is the rarer problem. If the wording is forced or the phrases make no sense in context, the links read as artificial and the profile can be discounted. In practice most GSA SER users have the opposite issue: they fill in the main anchor field, leave the other six empty, and hammer one keyword.

Do I need a paid ChatGPT account to use the anchor text tool?

No. A free ChatGPT account can use existing GPTs, including ours. Free accounts have lower message limits than paid ones, so a heavy session may pause you for a while, but there is nothing to buy to generate your anchor text.

What happens if my percentages add up to more than 100?

GSA SER calculates the main anchor as whatever is left of 100% after the six fields you filled in. If those six total 101%, there is nothing left and your exact-match anchor never gets used. Add your six numbers up before saving the project and leave 1–2% headroom.

Hier finden Sie Tipps zur Erstellung von Ankertextvariationen.

How to implement anchor text variations strategically

Start with a keyword list that mixes short head terms and longer phrases. Build your anchor sets from it: exact match, partial match, branded, and generic. Then check that no single type dominates before you paste anything into GSA SER.

How to use branded anchor text variations

Use your brand or company name as the link text, and include the variations people actually type: the full name, the short version, and the name with your domain. This is the safest volume you can build, which is why it gets the biggest share.

How to create effective partial match anchor text

Put your keyword inside a phrase that would read normally in a sentence. “Best GSA SER link lists for 2026” works. “GSA SER link lists cheap buy” does not. If it would look odd in someone else’s article, it will look odd to Google too.

How to diversify your anchor text profile

Vary the target as well as the wording. Sending every link to your home page is its own footprint, no matter how varied the anchors are. Spread them across the pages worth ranking, and let the anchor match the page it points to.

How to measure whether it is working

Track positions for your target keywords in Google Search Console and watch organic traffic over weeks rather than days. If rankings move for the head term but nothing else, your profile is probably too narrow. If nothing moves at all, look at where the links are coming from before you touch the percentages again.
