11 Conclusion on SEO Trends

SEO in 2026 looks different from SEO in 2024. Google now answers a large share of questions on the results page itself, the Core Web Vitals metrics have changed, and a second audience has appeared: the AI assistants that read your page and quote it back to someone who may never visit your site.

This guide covers what changed, what the numbers actually say, and what to do about it. No predictions and no invented statistics. Every figure below is sourced and dated.

Quick answer: the SEO trends that matter in 2026

  1. Fewer clicks per ranking. When Google shows an AI summary, only 8% of visits end in a click on a normal result, against 15% without one.
  2. Core Web Vitals changed. INP replaced FID in 2024. Aim for LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1.
  3. Updates are constant. Google shipped core updates in March 2025, June 2025, December 2025, March 2026 and May 2026, plus four spam updates.
  4. Write to be quoted, not just ranked. Clear answers, real authorship and clean structured data are what an AI system can lift and cite.
  5. Links still count. Nothing Google shipped in 2025 or 2026 removed links as a ranking signal.

Click data: Pew Research Center, March 2025 browsing panel. Update history: Google Search Status Dashboard, checked 7 September 2026.

Modifications de l'algorithme

Search engines keep adjusting how they rank pages, and two things have moved far enough since 2024 to change what you should be doing: the pace of confirmed updates, and the metrics Google uses to judge page experience.

Google algorithm changes affecting SEO rankings

Google’s update cadence in 2025 and 2026

People often ask when the next big update is coming. The answer is that there is always one coming. Here is the confirmed record from Google’s own status dashboard:

  • August 2026 spam update — launched 18 August 2026, finished in under three days
  • June 2026 spam update — launched 24 June 2026
  • May 2026 core update — launched 21 May 2026, took nearly 12 days
  • March 2026 core update — launched 27 March 2026, took over 12 days
  • February 2026 Discover update — the first update aimed specifically at Discover
  • December 2025 core update — launched 11 December 2025, took 18 days

Two things follow from that list. Core updates now take one to three weeks to finish, so do not judge your rankings on day three. And spam updates run separately and finish fast, which matters if you build links at volume.

User Experience and Core Web Vitals: INP replaced FID

If your notes still mention First Input Delay, they are out of date. Interaction to Next Paint became a stable Core Web Vital in 2024 and FID was retired. The current three metrics and their targets are:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) — loading. Good is 2.5 seconds or less.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP) — responsiveness. Good is 200 milliseconds or less.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) — visual stability. Good is 0.1 or less.

One detail people miss: Google measures these at the 75th percentile of page loads, split between mobile and desktop. Your average is not the number that counts. The slowest quarter of your visitors is.

EEAT and author signals

EEAT is not a score inside Google’s system, but the things it describes are measurable on your site. Name the author. Give them a real bio page with their track record. Keep your organisation details consistent everywhere. Use clean structured data so the author, the organisation and the article are linked as one graph rather than three loose facts.

Les technologies émergentes et leur impact sur le référencement naturel

Three shifts have done more to change day-to-day SEO work than any single ranking update: AI answers on the results page, AI inside your own workflow, and video taking more of the space that text used to own.

Emerging technologies changing how search engines and AI assistants read content

The rise of zero-click searches and AI Overviews

In 2024 zero-click search was a talking point. In 2026 it is the shape of the results page. The Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 real Google searches from 900 US adults during March 2025, of which 12,593 produced an AI summary. The results:

  • With an AI summary on the page, 8% of visits ended in a click on a normal search result.
  • Without one, 15% of visits produced a click — close to double.
  • Seulement 1% of visits included a click on a source link inside the AI summary itself.
  • Users ended their browsing session on 26% of pages with an AI summary, against 16% without.

Read that carefully before you panic. It does not say ranking stopped working. It says the same ranking position now returns fewer visits on questions Google can answer itself. Queries where someone wants to buy, download, compare or hire still send traffic, because a summary paragraph does not finish the job.

Answer Engine Optimisation: writing to be quoted

Answer engine optimisation is not a new discipline bolted onto SEO. It is the same work aimed at a machine that has to extract one clean fact from your page and attribute it to you.

  • Answer in the first two sentences under each heading, then explain. Do not build up to the answer.
  • Use headings that match real questions instead of clever labels. How much does a GSA SER VPS cost” beats “Investment.
  • Put facts in lists and tables. Numbers buried in a paragraph get skipped.
  • Date your facts. “Checked September 2026” tells both a reader and a model that the figure is current.
  • Cite your sources by name. A page that shows its working is easier to trust and easier to quote.

The role of Artificial Intelligence in SEO

AI earns its place on the repetitive parts of the job. It does not replace the parts that need experience. Here is the split as we use it:

What AI does well:

  • Clustering thousands of keywords into topics in minutes
  • Drafting outlines and first passes you then rewrite
  • Spotting gaps between your page and the pages already ranking
  • Turning a messy backlink or log export into something readable
  • Writing the repetitive parts: alt text, meta descriptions, schema

What still needs a person:

  • Anything factual. Models invent figures with total confidence. Every number in this article was checked against a primary source.
  • First-hand experience. A model has never run a campaign, lost a ranking or fixed a broken setup at 2am.
  • Judgement about risk. How hard to push, what to avoid, when to stop.

Google’s guidance has been consistent: it judges the content, not how the content was produced. Mass-produced pages with nothing new in them are what its spam updates target. Publishing volume without substance is the risk, not the tool.

The power of video SEO

Video holds up better than text against zero-click behaviour, because a summary cannot replace a demonstration. If you sell anything technical, a screen recording of the thing working is one of the highest-value assets you can make.

  • Give every video a transcript on the page. It is the part search engines and AI systems can actually read.
  • Use VideoObject structured data so the video can appear as its own result.
  • Short-form clips work as discovery, not as your ranking asset. Point them back at the full page.

Our own walkthrough is in the video SEO guide.

Adapter votre stratégie SEO pour réussir

Knowing what changed is not the same as knowing what to do differently. Two adjustments carry most of the weight in 2026.

Adapting an SEO and link building strategy to current search technology

Prioritise intent over informational volume

  1. Shift effort toward queries with intent behind them. Comparison, pricing, setup, troubleshooting and buying pages hold their clicks far better than definition pages.
  2. Stop measuring success by impressions alone. Track clicks and conversions per query group in Search Console, not average position.
  3. Give the reader a reason to continue. A downloadable list, a working configuration, a real screenshot, a calculator. Things a summary cannot reproduce.
  4. Accept being cited. Being named inside an AI answer builds recognition even without the click, so make your brand name easy to attach to the fact.

Link building in 2026

Every year someone announces that links are dead. Every year the pages that rank still have them. Nothing Google shipped in 2025 or 2026 changed that. What has changed is that careless construction de liens is caught faster, with spam updates now finishing in two or three days.

  • Varied anchor text. Exact-match anchors at scale remain the clearest footprint you can leave. Our anchor text guide covers the ratios we use.
  • Tiered structures. Keep the automated volume on tier two and tier three, and keep tier one clean and relevant.
  • Verified targets over raw scraping. A smaller list of sites that actually post beats a huge list that mostly fails. That is the idea behind our listes de liens vérifiés.
  • Patience with pacing. Sudden spikes are the pattern spam systems look for.

Exemples pratiques

Practical examples of applying current SEO practice

Example 1: diagnosing a failing INP score

INP catches sites that a load-time test says are fine. The work is always the same four steps:

  1. Open PageSpeed Insights and read the field data, not the lab score. Field data is what Google uses.
  2. If INP is above 200ms, the cause is almost always JavaScript blocking the main thread when someone taps or clicks.
  3. Find the heaviest offenders: chat widgets, pop-ups, cookie banners, analytics stacked three deep, and page builders loading scripts for widgets you no longer use.
  4. Defer what is not needed for the first interaction, then re-measure after 28 days. Field data is a rolling 28-day window, so it will not move overnight.

Example 2: rewriting a page that lost its clicks

A page holding its impressions but losing clicks is the classic AI Overview pattern. Here is how to treat it:

  1. In Search Console, compare the last three months against the same period a year earlier and sort by impressions.
  2. Flag pages where impressions held steady but clicks dropped. Those are the ones being answered above you.
  3. Check what the page is answering. If the whole answer fits in two sentences, Google will give those two sentences itself.
  4. Add what a summary cannot carry: a real configuration, a screenshot of the setting, a download, a comparison table, a price.
  5. Keep the short answer at the top anyway. You want the citation even when you do not get the click.

This post is an example of it. The quick answer box near the top exists so a machine can lift the summary, while the detail underneath is the reason a person stays.

Conseils et bonnes pratiques

SEO tips and best practices checklist

A checklist you can work through this week:

  1. Pull your Core Web Vitals report and check INP, not FID. Fix anything above 200ms at the 75th percentile.
  2. List your top 20 pages by impressions. Mark the ones that answer a question Google can answer itself, and rewrite those toward intent.
  3. Add a two-sentence direct answer under every H2 on your money pages.
  4. Check your structured data validates, and that author, organisation and article are linked properly.
  5. Put a named author with a real bio on every article.
  6. Date every statistic you publish, and replace the ones you cannot source.
  7. Audit your anchor text spread before you build anything new.
  8. Record one short demonstration video for your most commercial page.

Outils recommandés

Recommended SEO tools
  • Google Search Console — free, and the only source of your real click data. Start here.
  • PageSpeed Insights — field data for LCP, INP and CLS at the 75th percentile.
  • Ahrefs or Semrush — backlink monitoring and competitor research. One is enough.
  • GSA Search Engine Ranker — automated tier two and tier three link building, paired with a verified target list.
  • A rich results test — check your schema before you rely on it.

FAQ About SEO Trends in 2026

FAQ about SEO trends
Is SEO still worth doing if AI answers the question first?

Yes, but the target moved. Informational queries return fewer clicks now, so the value sits in queries with intent behind them: buying, comparing, setting up, troubleshooting. Those still send visitors, because a summary paragraph does not finish the job for the reader.

What replaced First Input Delay?

Interaction to Next Paint, or INP. It became a stable Core Web Vital in 2024 and FID was retired. INP measures how quickly the page responds across all interactions, not just the first one. Aim for 200 milliseconds or less at the 75th percentile.

How often does Google update its algorithm now?

Constantly, with named updates several times a year. In 2026 alone Google confirmed core updates in March and May, spam updates in March, June and August, and a Discover update in February. Core updates take one to three weeks to finish, so wait for the rollout to complete before drawing conclusions.

Will AI-written content get my site penalised?

Not for being AI-written. Google’s position is that it judges the content, not the production method. What gets caught is mass-produced pages that add nothing, which is what spam updates target. Use AI for drafting and grunt work, then add the experience and checking that a model cannot supply.

Do backlinks still matter in 2026?

Yes. No update in 2025 or 2026 removed links as a ranking signal, and the pages that rank still have them. What changed is the speed of enforcement against careless building. Vary your anchors, keep tier one clean, use verified targets and do not spike your velocity.

How do I get quoted in AI answers?

Answer the question directly in the first two sentences under a heading that matches how people ask it. Put facts in lists, date them, name your sources, and use valid structured data that ties the article to a named author and your organisation. Machines quote what is easy to extract and attribute.

Future Outlook of SEO Trends

The future outlook for SEO

We are not going to guess at what Google ships next. What the record supports is this: updates keep coming at the same pace, the results page keeps giving more room to answers and less to links, and the sites that hold their traffic are the ones offering something a summary cannot.

Conclusion on SEO Trends

The work has not really changed. Be fast, be clear, be the person who actually knows the subject, and build links carefully. That was true in 2024 and it is still true now. What changed is the margin for padding, which is close to zero.
